M. Ward carries a torch for Roy Orbison

M. Ward and Roy Orbison

The Quote from M. Ward: “One of the songs we listened to is a Roy Orbison song called In Dreams. As far as the production goes on that record, which I think is one of the best ever, in my opinion, he goes from 0 to about 100 mph emotionally in the span of 2 1/2 minutes. There’s a lot of complicated chord arrangements and a lot of complicated orhestral parts, but it doesn’t come off as complicated.”

New to Roy Orbison? Start here: Back before all-star tributes were the norm, a group of modern rockers got together in 1987 to pay tribute to their idol, Roy Orbison. The ‘backing band’ was a once in a lifetime ‘you-can’t-make-this-shit-up’ assembly of greats: Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, T Bone Burnett and Bruce Springsteen. Need backup singers to bring Roy’s beautiful arrangements to life? OK. Why not get k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt to back you up? It happened folks.
